May 12, 2022 – It is time to get back to racing for the Idemitsu Mazda MX-5 Cup presented by BFGoodrich® Tires after a nearly nine week delay. With two events in the Sunshine State at the Daytona International Speedway and St. Petersburg Grand Prix, Copeland Motorsports will bring three drivers to the famed Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course this weekend.
“We have one win and a couple podiums on the resume so far this year but will be hunting for more this weekend in Ohio,” explained Dean Copeland. “The Mid-Ohio facility is one that we have had much success at in the past, and I am confident that we will be at the pointy end of the grid by the time the checkered flag flies for rounds five and six.”
Leading the way into the weekend for Copeland Motorsports will be Daytona race winner Tyler Gonzalez. With one victory on the season, Gonzalez is a threat every race weekend and looks to Mid-Ohio for win number two. Rookie Max Opalski will be back with Copeland Motorsports as he and Gonzalez recently stood on the podium at a World Racing League event with Copeland Motorsports and competed at the NASA event at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course a few weeks ago.
Copeland added, “While the series may have had a break, we have been hard at work racing around the country, testing and preparing and hope the combination of these three things bring us success this weekend.”
Joining Gonzalez and Opalski will be Jameson Riley who has come into his own as of late. Earning a pair of top-ten results in the first four rounds and finishing eleventh in one of the others, Riley will look to climb a little further up the results sheets this weekend.
The trio of Copeland Motorsports drivers will hit the track Friday for a pair of practice sessions with qualifying and race one of the weekend on Saturday. Sunday will be the home of round six and the second wheel-to-wheel action of the weekend.
