Skyler Cottrell will make his Whelen Mazda MX-5 Cup debut May 24 at Barber Motorsports Park, driving the No. 76 entry for AAG Racing.

Cottrell, a Georgia native, began racing in 2020, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather. He quickly found success in Spec Miata, earning numerous wins and podiums at both national and regional levels before transitioning to Spec MX-5 for the 2025 season.

During the 2024 season, Cottrell captured four wins and seven podium finishes in eight Spec Miata races. His accolades include 2021 Atlanta Region SCCA Rookie of the Year and 2024 Atlanta Region SARRC Driver of the Year honors. He finished second overall in the 2024 SARRC Spec Miata championship.

In his current Spec MX-5 campaign, Cottrell has notched one win, one pole position and three fastest laps. His first victory of the season came in dominant flag-to-flag fashion at the VIR Hoosier Super Tour.

Cottrell, a junior studying economics at Georgia Southern University, is balancing academics and racing as he eyes a full-time ride in the Whelen Mazda MX-5 Cup in 2026. He hopes a strong finish to the Spec MX-5 season will earn him a scholarship opportunity to support that goal.

Cottrell gears up for MX-5 Cup action when the series returns to Barber Motorsports Park, May 2–4.

“I’m very excited about making my MX-5 debut at Barber with AAG. I’m happy to be under the same tent as some of my best friends on and off the track. Barber is a really tight and technical course, but it makes for great racing, and I can’t wait to see what we can do,” Cottrell said.

“Skyler is a talented young driver. He has proven that he can compete in Spec MX-5. It will be great to have him behind the wheel of one of our cars for his MX-5 Cup debut,” Chris Clarke, Owner of AAG Racing, said.
