It was another successful weekend for BSI Racing in the Whelen Mazda MX-5 Cup presented by Michelin, last weekend at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, in Bowmanville, Ontario.
The team returned to winning form again, nabbing the top step in back-to-back race weekends for the series. Westin Workman, the Charlotte, North Carolina rookie earned his second victory of the season, and his career with a thrilling win in race one on Saturday.
In a race that featured six different lead changes, it was BSI’s No. 13 of Westin Workman who was able to hold on to the checkered flag. McCumbee-McAleer Racing’s, Gresham Wagner would cross the finish line in first place but was assessed a 10-second penalty for violating the track limit policy set forth by CTMP.
Well aware of the incoming penalty that would be assigned to Wagner, Workman was able to navigate the P2 racing position ultimately to victory. Workman began the race in P6, quickly working his way to the front, leading at times throughout the race. Though the rookie has only seen the podium twice this season, both podiums have come in winning fashion.
That wasn’t all for BSI either. Connor Zilisch piloted the No. 72 Silver Hare Racing machine to a P3 finish in race one as well, notching his fourth podium of the season.
Lastly, it was Heather Hadley in the No. 54, blue and white Shift Up Now livery that fought to a P12 finish, earning the honor of the Top Finishing Female award, and a $2,000 check to go with it. It was Hadley’s first return to the podium since Sebring, last March.
Though race two would see less fruitful results for the team, Westin Workman walked away with a crucial points lead on rookie and fellow scholarship recipient, Nathan Nicholson of JTR Motorsports. With Nicholson subject to a one-race suspension, Workman can take control of the rookie championship at VIR in August.
“I’m thrilled with our guys this weekend”, said team owner Shea Holbrook.
“The cars were fast; the crew busted their tails and our drivers drove phenomenally. I’m so proud of our whole team for the effort we put in this weekend. It’s great to see Westin (Workman) be up top again. He’s ahead of schedule.
And for Heather to navigate the speed of this track in that pack, I’m so pumped for her to get back to the podium, and glad she’s OK after race two. I’m just so proud of them.”
