Multi-time karting champion heads to Leeds, Alabama and Barber Motorsports Park

April 3, 2019 - With his first Battery Tender Global MX-5 Cup Presented by BF Goodrich event now under his belt, Floridian Tyler Gonzalez knows what to expect. Claiming a pair of top-ten results, including the Hard Charger Award and accompanying $1000.00 check that went along with it, the Copeland Motorsports driver has his eyes firmly place to the front of the grid and top step of the podium.

"Did I have good results in Texas, yes, for sure but they are not exactly what I wanted," explained Gonzalez. "The Global MX-5 Cup field is full of fast drivers, but my goal is to be the fastest. A pair of top-tens is a great start to the year, but I will be aiming to be much higher up the grid this coming weekend at the Barber Motorsports Park."

Starting each of his two wheel-to-wheel events outside the top-15 last weekend, Gonzalez drove forward, well inside the top-ten. Running lap times comparable to the race leaders, the talented 15-year-old gained experience and knowledge with each passing lap.

Gonzalez added, "I think the biggest thing I learned is how much the handling of the car changes with track temperature. On Saturday we raced in the heat of the afternoon and Sunday we raced in the cool of the morning, and it felt as if I was driving two different cars. I now know and understand and will work better with the crew and team on my feedback."

Sharing the track with the NTT IndyCar Series, IMSA Porsche GT3 Series, and Lamborghini Super Trofeo programs, the upcoming weekend is set to be an exciting one.

Gonzalez continued, "Saturday is going to be very unique as we are normally only on track for two sessions per day, but this weekend it will be three and two of them will be races. I am going to have to be cautiously aggressive as an incident in race one may hurt the chances of making the grid for race two only a few hours later."

Tyler Gonzalez and Copeland Motorsports will hit the track on Thursday for a pair of Promoters Test Sessions. Friday will be two additional practice runs while Saturday will be a jam-packed day with qualifying and a pair of races.
